CALEA Appoints Rep. Tallon to Commission

CALEA Appoints Rep. Tallon to Commission

Gainesville, Virginia, October 11, 2012 – CALEA, the Gold Standard in Public Safety Accreditation, is pleased to announce the appointment of a new Commissioner ─ the Honorable Edward R. “Eddie” Tallon, Sr., District 33, House of Representatives, State of South Carolina, will begin a three- year term January 1, 2013.

CALEA was established as an independent accrediting authority in 1979 by the four major law enforcement executive associations: International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP); National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE); National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA); and Police Executive Research Forum (PERF).  The Commission has 21 members, including 11 law enforcement practitioners and 10 members from the public and private sectors.  The position is voluntary and Commissioners are appointed to a term of three years.

CALEA was established to develop law enforcement standards and administer an accreditation process through which law enforcement agencies could voluntarily demonstrate they meet professionally recognized criteria for excellence in management and service delivery.  Since its inception, CALEA has added accreditation programs for Public Safety Communications, Training Academies, and Campus Security.  These programs serve as a modern management model for public safety agencies internationally.

Representative Tallon was elected in November 2010 and serves on the House Judiciary Committee and Criminal Laws Subcommittee. He is also president of the Tallon Group, a consulting company, and is a retired lieutenant, supervisory special agent of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.  He holds a Bachelor’s degree in sociology from Limestone College, South Carolina, and is a U.S. Air Force veteran.  He is a life member of IACP and a life member and past president of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Officers’ Association, as well as a member of the Certified Fraud Examiner Association, among others.

Representative Tallon brings a wealth of knowledge and experience that will be beneficial to CALEA in meeting its mission.  We congratulate and welcome our new Commissioner.
